From an exercise perspective, golf is a rotational sport. For a swing to reach full athletic potential, a golfer should be flexible and strong. While it is not my intention to debate swing mechanics, it is essential to realize that compensations and bad habits are picked up when the body cannot mechanically perform the actions called upon it. It has been my experience with clients that tightness is a golfers biggest weakness. Time and time again, it always seems to be the same thing - tight hamstrings and shoulders accompanied by weak lower back and abs. Statistics indicate that between 30 and 50 % of golfers have suffered from low back issues. Let's face it, your backswing stretches one side of your body and your downswing primarily contracts one side of your body. The longer a person practices this one-sided-type activity, the greater the likelihood for imbalances in the body. Considering the chain is only as strong as its weakest link, isn't it about time more people realized the need for conditioning in this sport? Furthermore, can you really be too strong? Do not confuse this with too big, too bulky, too tight. What I am asking is wouldn't it be nice to hit the ball as far or farther than you currently hit with less effort?
